"Oliver Faribault...Here's some things that I know about him:
He was born in 1815, most likely in Prairie du Chien. He died in October 1850 (I've got the exact date somewhere) He is buried in Faribault, in the same plot as his brother Alexander. His wife Harriet is buried in Shakopee, (I think in either the cemetary on a hill just south of Canterbury Downs, or in the small one near the high school. Memory fails me right now.)
If you've ever read "Old Rail Fence Corners" there's a few pages there written by his daughter Lucy. I've got copies of his purchases from H.H. Sibley's post in Mendota."

One family with roots in what is now North Dakota is given credit for the names of at least three cities in the area and one geographic feature.

Last week I wrote about the early life of Duncan Graham, his close relationship (business and personal) with the Sioux Indians and his military ability in defeating Zachary Taylor during the War of 1812. This article will focus on his later life and the legacy left by Graham and his family.

After the War of 1812, Graham resumed trading with the Indians, British, and, to a lesser degree, the Americans. In 1815, he went to Devils Lake and set up a trading post on a peninsula.

He was the first white person to settle in this area. The peninsula bears his name: Graham's Island - and, at 3,000 acres, it is the largest recreation area in the Devils Lake State Park system.

In the meantime, the Selkirk Colony, which Graham was formerly involved with, was engaged in a war with the Northwest Fur Co. Part of the Selkirk Colony was the Red River Settlement, which was started in 1812.

The trappers within the Northwest Fur Co., primarily Metis, had attacked the settlement at Seven Oaks, Manitoba, and killed 22 of Selkirk's men. The Earl of Selkirk needed people with battle and negotiation experience, and he soon called upon Graham.

For the next four years, Graham assisted the colonies along the Red River and was successful in negotiating a truce as well as a trading agreement with prominent traders of the Northwest Fur Co. However, he was plagued by the constant fighting between the Sioux and Chippewa Indians and the loss of crops in 1819 and 1820 due to grasshopper infestations.

In the early 1820s, Graham was commissioned a captain by the U.S. Army and reported to Fort Snelling, near St. Paul, Minn. His primary duty in the military was to assist Maj. Lawrence Taliaferro in mediating disputes between the Sioux and Chippewa Indians.

He also served as Taliaferro's interpreter. As he approached his 60th birthday, Graham's desire to return to the wilderness and resume his main love of trading became very important to him.

In 1832, he established a trading post in eastern Minnesota and named the settlement Wabasha after his wife's grandfather, Wapasha I. He became a U.S. citizen two years later and raised his family of four daughters and a son at Wabasha.

Graham's daughters all married prominent individuals within the community. Mary Elizabeth married Alexander Faribault, who founded Faribault, Minn., served as an Indian agent at Fort Snelling, and represented his district in the Minnesota Territorial Legislature. Jane married James "Bully" Wells, who also became a member of the Minnesota Territorial legislature. Another daughter married Oliver Cratte, a merchant and blacksmith in Minnesota. Nancy married Joseph Buisson, an Indian trader from Montreal who assisted Graham in setting up the trading post at Wabasha.

Graham remained at Wabasha until early 1847, when he moved to Mendota, 75 miles north of Wabasha, to live with his daughter Nancy Buisson. He died on Dec. 5, 1847. The legacy of Duncan Graham and his family is quite significant when you consider the areas they settled, the towns they named, and the peace they brokered.

To recap, his wife's grandfather, Wapasha I, and uncle, Wapasha II, were friendly to the whites and encouraged trade of both goods and culture. The city of Wabasha, Minn., settled by Graham and his son-in-law, Joseph Buisson, was named in honor of Chief Wapasha I.

Graham's genes for negotiating peace were no doubt passed down. His granddaughter, Marie Buisson, married another Scotsman, James McLaughlin.

McLaughlin became an Indian agent in 1876. In 1881, 3,500 hostile followers of Sitting Bull were returned from Canada, and McLaughlin was reassigned to the Standing Rock Agency, in what is now southern North Dakota, to deal with the issue.

Most historians say that he and his wife did a masterful job in handling that volatile situation. Before his death in 1923, McLaughlin signed more than 40 treaties. The Rev. Louis Pfaller, a historian, wrote that McLaughlin "became the greatest treaty-maker and trouble-shooter our government has ever seen." The city of McLaughlin, S.D., was named in his honor.

Thanks so much for posting this tree. In his statement in the Flandrau papers my g-grandfather mentions his kinship with Wabasha and says this makes the Moizo, Faribault, Wells, and Prescott families related (his mother was a Moizo or Monjeau). This has helped clarify some of that for me.
